Colfer, Eoin - 'Plugged'
Hardback: 288 pages (May 2011) Publisher: Headline ISBN: 0755379985

This is the first adult crime novel by the author of the Artemis Fowl books for children.

Dan is a bouncer for a seedy club in New Jersey. He loves Connie, a hostess and single mum of two children. When Connie is found murdered in the alley behind the club, Dan is a suspect and sets out to solve the mystery. His best friend, Zeb, a plastic surgeon operating on the seedy side of the business also goes missing. Dan finds himself in trouble when he crosses the path of Mike Madden, the local hard guy drug boss in his search for answers.

The book made me remember the film noirs with Robert Mitchum as the world weary tough guy with a soft spot, and the books of Raymond Chandler. It has that seedy, edgy atmosphere of life that edges into criminal behaviour very quickly.

PLUGGED is described as a "darkly comic adult crime novel". In my opinion it isn't laugh out loud comedy but there were plenty of passages in it that made me smile. I developed affection for Dan in particular and was intrigued to find out how he was going to solve the murder, find his friend and also come out alive without making a long term enemy of Mike Madden.

A good read – light enough for the beach or to while away a long journey.
