Mark, David - 'Original Skin'
Paperback: 464 pages (Jan. 2014) Publisher: Quercus ISBN: 0857389785

There is a new chairman of the Hull police authority. Councillor Peter Tressider is a high flyer and is expected to get a nomination to stand for Parliament. Trish Pharaoh, detective superintendent in charge of the Major Incident Team has a drug war problem. The local Vietnamese who usually run this operation are being found badly mutilated and refusing to talk.

Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy does not believe the death of a gay man Simon Appleyard was suicide. He needs to find the young girl called Suzie who went with Simon to sex parties. He and his wife Roisin are being kept awake by their baby daughter. McAvoy is also aware of gypsy travellers in the area and his wife's background as a traveller. Suzie is nearly killed and must go into hiding but does not know from whom she is hiding. Can McAvoy find her in time? Who is targeting Suzie and was Simon killed and why?

ORIGINAL SKIN is the second book based in Hull featuring Pharaoh and McAvoy by the ex-Yorkshire Post journalist and this is turning into an excellent series featuring Trish Pharaoh, sexy and intelligent, and the larger than life Aector who is continually embarrassed, and in thrall to his impish wife and two children. Pharaoh's number two, the cynical Detective Chief inspector Colin Ray, and Detective Inspector Shaz Archer (both as thick as thieves) feature more in this book.

Highly recommended. I look forward to the next book in this series.
